<International Circulation>: As we know, diabetes is associated with factors such as genetic and diet, which are different between Chinese and Westerner. Could you please to introduce characteristics of diabetes in Western country that is different from Chinese?
<International Circulation>: FINDRISC include main components of metabolic syndrome. How do you think about the main mechanism that metabolic syndrome increases the risk of diabetes? And in your opinion, what kind of drugs should we use to treat diabetic patients with metabolic syndrome.
Prof. Tuomilehto: Metabolic syndrome is a difficult concept to understand because it encompasses variety of factors: obesity, lipid abnormalities, high blood pressure and glucose abnormalities. Each of these conditions requires a different treatment and we do not have a drug which can target al of these, but we do have lifestyle recommendations which can improve each of them. Such lifestyle recommendations include: physical activity, reducing excess calories, losing weight and to change eating habits from high refined carbohydrate, high sugar and high fat foods to more fresh fruit, vegetables and fibre containing foods. Taken together all these have the capacity to influence positively all the components of metabolic syndrome.
